Long time no writing!

HEY! So I know I’ve not posted in a ¬†…. Long time … Since Halo 4 came out .. Oh wow!

I can’t say I’ve really been doing anything interesting but I felt I needed to make a new post on here so people don’t feel like they’re ‘following’ me for no reason.

I watched ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ last night, by the way people .. And oh wow! It’s such a good film! So pleased with it! It actually made me feel a bit emotional too which I didn’t expect, I love Ralph! And Fix-It Felix had his own bitta’ romance within the film, lovely! Did the King remind anybody else of the Mad Hatter from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ .. Or was that just me? I couldn’t help but find some similarities, especially when he was first introduced into the film anyway.

Yeah, still at university, still got lots of reading and work to do – So I guess that’s my excuse for not writing sooner! That and Halo .. Of course.

I’ll write a better, more interesting post during next week, I just wanna’ relax now.

An Ancient Evil Awakens.

Well, well, well .. HALO 4 !!!!

All of us true Halo fans have been waiting for this game for SO LONG!! I remember pre-ordering the game with about 5 months to go … And people called me silly .. At least I got the Limited Edition, muaha .. But *cough* Anyway …

The graphics within this game are mind blowingly spectacular – Nothing short of AMAZING.

As stated at the top of this post .. No spoilers here but the campaign is SO SO good!!!!! I’m on mission seven at the moment, 4 hrs spent on the campaign so far .. I got lost on like .. Mission 2 I think it was … Yeah, me and directions don’t bode well, ha! I’ve decided to give myself a rest from it tonight, well, maybe just for a few hours as my eyes have started to hurt from all the AWESOME!!

I don’t think there is much I can say without ruining the campaign so I’ll go on to multiplayer …

So much fun! The maps are pretty damn cool and the weapons as you will find are really good too!

You know what … I’m gunna’ leave it all here .. If you want to know, buy it and play it … You will NOT be disappointed. It’ll be one of the best purchases of the year .. Without a doubt. It’s definitely the best FPS game I’ve EVER played.

Enjoy, Spartans.

South Park

So, a friend of mine gave me a brilliant post idea: ‘Top 5 South Park episodes? Including why they are top five and the best moments. Also a rundown of your top 5 characters?’

So, why not, eh?! Let’s get started. As I do this I’m also re-watching them, for literally about the 50th time (maybe more) .. I’m a little obsessed.

As you know from a very early blog post, I am a MASSIVE South Park fan .. It’s definitely my favourite TV show, though I never watch it on the television, always on my laptop or DVD, anyway, what does that matter?

I will start with my personal top five South Park episodes and why…

1 – Tweek vs Craig (Season 3 episode 4) : This is number one for the simple reason I love Craig. Whenever he is center of an episode it never fails to make me laugh continuously; and with Tweek center too .. Could I ask for anything more? Well, maybe Butters too but hey! Now, the fact Craig ‘flips’ everybody off, I have no idea why but this doesn’t half make me giggle! Mr Adler is also a pretty comic character in this episode, maybe not wholly intentionally but it certainly entertained me – The excuses he made for not sleeping with the home-ec teacher (I forget her name) made me chuckle.

2 – City Sushi (Season 15 episode 6) : This is one of the most hilarious episodes, ever, in my opinion. The whole turf-war with the Chinese and the Japanese¬†restaurant owners is nothing short of funny! The part of this episode which ALWAYS makes me burst out laughing is “CAN YOU PEREASE JUS’ A SPEAK A ENGRISH MAYBE I CAN UNDERSTAND YOU.” and “I DON’ EVEN KNOW WHAT DA FU*K YOU ARE SAYING A BUR BUR B-DUR BUR BUR!” .. Also, I love how much trouble Butters gets into, it’s hilarious. He’s one of the cutest characters which, for some reason, makes it even more funny – And his parents are two underrated characters – In my opinion anyway, they’re hilarious!!!

3 – Chicken Lover (Season 2 episode 3) : A chicken fu*cker .. Do I need to say more? A man having sex with chickens?! HILARIOUS! All to try and help Officer Barbrady to read too. Matt Stone and Trey Parker are geniuses .. Also, the first minute or so of the episode, Matt and Trey “entertaining” a group of elderly people, the way they do it too, ha! I also love the fact they state that ‘This is our favourite’ for every single episode they introduce. Another reason I love this episode is simply for Cartman … “Respect my authoritahhhhhh” on his little tricycle too, ahhhh, amazing!

4 – Gnomes (Season 2 episode 17) : “Mr Hat is gunna’ smack you bitches up!” – I love Mr Garrison … Reason one why this episode is one of my top 5. Again this episode focuses on Tweek – Reason 2 .. I find him, like Butters, stupidly cute! Also, Tweek’s parents, well, his father makes me laugh too … He seems so, random! Ha ha. The gnomes, HILARIOUS!! When Cartman hits one on the head with a stick, I literally burst out laughing. Where do Matt and Trey come up with this stuff? THANK YOU!

5 – Cartman Joins NAMBLA (Season 4 episode 6) : The lengths Kenny goes to to try and stop his mum and dad having another baby is just amazing; abortion pills with Vodka – Which his dad ends up drinking instead! Cartman’s search for mature friends … When he joins a website to find them too, his name ‘BigBoned’ and then when one man, ‘HungDaddy’ replies to him “Hi, I’m eight and a half inches.” So Cartman replies “Damn, this guy’s tiny, he must be a dwarf. *typing: Sorry, I’m not interested in being friends with midgets. Midgets piss me off. :(*” – Nothing short of funny!

Now on to my top 5 characters:

Randy Marsh

Tweek Tweak

Butters Stotch

Timmy Valmer

Mr Garrison

… Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the main characters, but I tried my best to choose characters that I believe are underrated. Of course Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Eric are my favourites too.

Hope you enjoyed reading and I hope it’s made you want to watch South Park .. I know it’s made me want to .. And I am doing.

Have a good day!

‘The Woodlanders’ – Thomas Hardy

Just as with all of Thomas Hardy’s novels that I have read, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I admit it took me longer to ‘get into’ the story line than others I have read, but when I was eventually fully engaged, this novel really did grip me.

It was extremely descriptive – Something I absolutely adore within a novel – How else are you meant to enter that world? As I have probably stated before – There has not been one Thomas Hardy piece of work that I have not enjoyed, and I hope his next three novels that I have to read live up to what I have already read. Though I don’t doubt them.

This, again, was a tragedy, as all of his works have been .. And again, yes .. I did shed a few tears .. Damn, I really do get too involved with the characters, don’t I?! When Giles died, oh, my heart broke, such a sweetheart and only ever wanted one woman – Grace – Who did annoy me, the bitch … Towards the end of the novel couldn’t make up her damn mind .. GO WITH GILES!!! But no, she went back to her cheating husband, Fitzpiers. DAMN GIRL!

Grace’s father – Mr Melbury highly irritated me. He would not let Grace do anything she wanted. Well, until the end but then it was too late!

In the beginning she wanted to marry Giles but her father didn’t want her to due to his social standing and so she ended up marrying Fitzpiers, whom when just simply courting Grace had a brief encounter (and a following encounter, and probably more) with another character Suke Damson, tut tut. ¬†After just two months of being married Fitzpiers thought he’d go off gallivanting¬†around and have relations with Mrs Charmond ¬†(who also annoyed me – playing the victim at one point in the novel, psht!) – Who turned out to be a sweetheart from his childhood years, but still .. Contain yourself, man!

After a few months apart, Grace felt swayed towards Giles again and was set in hope she could divorce Fitzpiers. Grace then, as instructed to do so by her father (no surprise there), encouraged Giles to become more involved with his feelings towards her – Which, obviously he did seeing as he never stopped loving her!

Giles’s feelings for Grace were ultimately his downfall as these feelings and the way he treated her when she asked for his help became the death of him – So sad, so¬†chivalrous¬†– I really did feel for him.

At the end of the novel Grace forgave Fitzpiers and stopped visiting Giles’s grave with Marty (who had feelings for Giles but was never recognised by him in the mutual way) and went off with her husband to live “happily ever after”.. Pft, yeah right. He probably cheated on her again the week after they moved.

It was a lovely read though, despite all the cheating going on! So yeah, you know what’s coming ….. GIVE IT A GO!

– Happy reading!

‘All My Friends Are Superheroes’ – Andrew Kaufman

This is such a lovely little novella. I’ve put off reading it for so long due to having many Uni books to read, I started it an about 50 minutes ago, finished it just now.

“… boil down your personality and abilities to a single phrase or image. If you can do that, you’re probably a superhero already.”

This novella took me through feeling sad, happy, excited, anxious and it was pretty damn romantic, and I ain’t usually one for romance. But I loved this.

It’s basically one man, Tom .. It’s his struggle of trying to convince his wife that he is not invisible. Since a jealous ex, Hypno, of his wife, The Perfectionist, decided to turn Tom invisible to her on the night of their wedding – What a horrible man! … Someone ain’t gettin’ lucky, eh eh.

Tom has the length of a plane ride to Vancouver – ONLY – to convince her he is right beside her!

This novella, however, does not just base itself around the two protagonists, but it takes you through the lives and explanations of many other superheroes too!

I was so, SO anxious as this story was coming to an end … I’m not going to finish my mini review on this novella as I’ll spoil it. Does The Perfectionist EVER see Tom again? You’ll have to read it to find out. As I stated, it only took me 50 minutes to read, so buy it, read it and enjoy it!!

– Happy reading!

‘Dracula’ – Bram Stoker

Two days ago I finally caught up with all the note-taking which I forgot to do the first time around reading this novel. I’m putting it down to getting way too into the story-line. So yes, I had to read the novel .. Again, though I’m not complaining as it is genuinely one of the best novels I have read, kudos to you Stoker.

After finally finishing reading all of the Vampire Fiction module novels (apart from Varney – But, have you seen the size of that book?) I can quite easily say ‘Dracula’, ‘Interview With The Vampire’ and though it pains me to say this ‘Lost Souls’ have been my favourite to read. As stated in earlier posts, I thought I’d despise ‘Lost Souls’ but it totally gripped me, so I can’t really complain now, can I?

Back to Dracula though…

One of the main aspects of the novel that made me love it even more was the fact it wasn’t all from one character’s point of view, it was from a few protagonists, all of which told the story amazingly. The fact it was all diary entries and letters was a great way of telling the story and progressing it – I love seeing a story grow from a first person point of view and this novel did JUST that. My favourite character(s) has to be Van Helsing or Dr John Seward – I just found their entries more compelling. Especially when Seward talked about his mental patient Reinfield, poor bloke. When I read what happened to him in his ‘cell’ I burst out with “Oh my god, no” with a shocked face .. How sad. What a monster Dracula is … Van Helsing though, how old was he, I THINK it stated 72 years old? (maybe not that old but hey) And he was hunting an infamous Vampire! Hell yes!

One part of the whole novel which gripped me though ¬†is in one of Jonathan Harker’s entries, toward the beginning of the novel (chapter three) when he is slowly realising what Count Dracula actually is … When he sees Dracula climbing on the side of the castle. *Shudder* Quotation: “But my very feelings changed to repulsion and terror when I saw the whole man slowly emerge from the window and begin to crawl down the castle wall over that dreadful abyss, face down, with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings.” – I think this chilled me mainly because it is Jonathan finally realising completely what he is up against and whom or should I say what he has been living with. I mean, imagine being in his position. I think I’d curl up in the corner and cry.

Mina, at first and until yesterday annoyed me, but now, thinking about it .. She helped them with the capture of Dracula so I supposed I have to give her some credit. Though the way she is depicted by the men within the novel, this annoyed me. Oh so innocent and fragile, eh? Gimme’ a break. She seemed a pretty boring character if I’m honest. I was pretty glad it was a happy ending for her and Jonathan though, poor fella. I suppose it will be pretty easy to gain some information on the idealised women of the Victorian age using Mina as an example – Thanks Mina!

In all honesty I haven’t done much background reading into this novel properly yet as I want to make my way through the rest of the novels I have to read for semester two, but once they are all done I’m gunna’ do as much background reading as possible. The edition of ‘Dracula’ which I have though seems to give me plenty of information regarding the novel which is a major help! I reckon I need to look further into women in the Victorian ages, ‘The New Woman’ (which is in my edition), superstitions and also I could look at a postcolonial reading of the text.

If I was to choose a novel to write about for my course, I have to say I’d choose one of the three I mentioned at the beginning of this post, simply because I most enjoyed them and because I can see myself getting a whole lot of information about each and their authors. Well, especially Bram Stoker and Poppy Z. Brite …

If any of you reading this have any information about Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ that you think would be helpful towards my understanding of the novel then please, leave a comment or a link to a website; or any readings you got from it personally… Very much appreciated.

Happy reading.

– Becky!
